In our first Language and Communication lesson of this half term we considered the question, ‘Should physical labour be used as a form of punishment?’
The words they were asked to consider were:
- punishment
- character
- inhumane
- society
This question has come about because in Holes, our current English text, a boy called Stanley Yelnats is sent to a juvenile detention centre in Texas for stealing a pair of trainers and is forced to dig holes in order to ‘build character’.
There were some interesting comments made including:
- What if you were framed and didn’t really do it?
- But it builds character and will ultimately make society a better place
- It’s in humane to mkae people work for no money/in poor conditions.
- It should be used for the more serious crimes, like murder but not for something like stealing
- If someone’s hurt someone else then they should suffer too.
