On Thursday we welcomed the Samsung ‘Space Decent with Tim Peake’ virtual reality tour bus to Harwood Park.
We won the opportunity after a social media competition on Twitter. The bus had visited Parliament and all MPs were given the chance to win the experience for a school in their constituency – and we got the most replies asking for the bus to come here.
Our local MP, Liz McInnes, joined us on the day of the visit and got to experience space for the second time alongside our pupils. Also present was Cllr Ray Dutton, our vice-chair of governors.
Thanks to the wonders of virtual reality, the children got to experience what is what like for Tim Peake to travel back to Earth in a Soyuz capsule when he returned from his six-month stay on the International Space Station. They also got to view our planet as it can be seen from the ISS, learn more about Tim Peake and complete some space training.
The children absolutely loved the whole day. They were engaged throughout the sessions and asked thoughtful, insightful questions of the crew members on the bus.
After the event, two children from year 4 – Amelia and Tryphon – got to appear on BBC Radio Manchester and ask questions of Tim Peake himself. You can listen to the recording below:
