Hello Class 9!

Today is VE Day – Victory in Europe Day.  It celebrates the Allied Forces accepting the Nazi’s unconditional surrender from World War 2. The final document was signed on 8 May 1945, meaning that this year marks the 75th anniversary. You can read more about VE day here and there’ll be lots of programmes on the TV about it today so maybe during one of your breaks from work you can watch.

Many people were planning street parties and parades to celebrate (like those that took place in 1945) but due to the lockdown and social distancing measures that are in place these now can’t happen. There are still ways you can mark the day though:

  • There will be a two minutes silence at 11am (broadcast on the BBC) to remember those who fought and died in the Second World War. Please take part and reflect on how lucky we are to have the freedoms we do today.
  • Have a street party with your family in your front garden. Maybe make some Union Flag bunting. (Did you know the flag should only called the Union Jack when it’s being flown on boats at sea?)
  • Design a VE day medal. Here’s a sheet to help.
  • The queen will address the nation on the TV and radio at 9pm. I know this might be past bedtime for some of you, but I think it would be worth asking if you could stay up. The reason it’s happening this late is that they want to do it at the same hour as the queen’s father, King George VI, made his radio address on the first VE Day in 1945

There was work put in your packs today, but you can leave it until next week if you want as today is a bank holiday. Here’s a reminder just in case:

  • Daily Exercise: Pick a dance video from Go Noodle.
  • Daily Reading: at least 15 minutes – please record in your reading record
  • Maths: Power Maths Unit 12, Lesson 4  – Rounding money (Book C pg 38-40). Here’s the Discover & Think Together guidance to help
  • English: Reading Comprehension – The Tale of Custard the Dragon
  • Spelling: Put the words into sentences
  • Fluency: Snowball Slalom Times Table game
  • Computing: Finish your comic strip. Colour in the pictures and outline where necessary. Ask a parent to email a scan/photograph of it to me at class9@harwoodpark.rochdale.sch.uk. Make sure your finished product is presented neatly and any writing can be read clearly. Try and make it as bright and exciting as possible.
  • Something fun: Mark VE day using one of the ideas at the top of the post.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to let everyone know what you’ve been up to! If you’ve missed any of the home learning, it’s still available on the blog so make sure to go back and catch up (particularly with the Maths or you may be lost).

If you have any questions about the work or want to send me photos or examples of the work you’ve been doing, please ask your parents to email me at class9@harwoodpark.rochdale.sch.uk or you can leave a comment here on the blog.
