Good morning Class 10.
You may have seen a lot in the news over the past few weeks about the protests in America and the #BlackLivesMatter movement to tackle racism. Unfortunately, racism isn’t just something that occurs in the US, it happens here too. There was a big movement against it in the 1950s and ’60s and, while things are better now than then, there is still a long way to go to ensure everyone is treated equally.
This video from Blue Peter explains what racism is and why it’s important that we stand together and pledge to do better at fighting it, to build a better future for everyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LLBDsVREaI
There are lots of ways you can learn about racism and its effects:
- Newsround has a special programme on racism that offers lots of helpful information about what is happening and why. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52978346
- You can read some of the words of black people about their opinions on racism and why change is important. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52917648
- Read the facts about George Floyd and the protests happening around the world. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52813673
- Hear what young African Americans have to say about their own experiences of racism and how they want things to change in the future. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52976350
And when you’ve done that, here are your learning tasks for today:
- Daily exercise: Go for a morning walk
- Reading: At least 20 mins – please record in your reading record.
- Maths: Ultimate Times Table Missing Number Challenge
- English: Creative Writing Task 5 – ‘Teapots’
- Maths Fluency: T/T Rockstars – Remember, your password is your date of birth in the format DD/MM/YY
- Something fun:
- Alphabet Treasure Hunt Can you find something in your house that begins with every letter of the alphabet. There’s only 1 rule – each item must be small enough to fit on a dinner plate.
Don’t forget to leave a comment to let everyone know what you’ve been up to! If you’ve missed any of the home learning, it’s still available on the blog so make sure to go back and catch up.
If you have any questions about the work or want to send me photos or examples of the work you’ve been doing, please ask your parents to email me at class10@harwoodpark.rochdale.sch.uk or you can leave a comment here on the blog.
