In Science this week, we were exploring how sound is made. We carried out an experiment to observe what happened when:

  • We hit a drum with small blocks on it
  • We plucked an elastic band
  • We twanged a ruler off the side of the table
  • We put a tuning fork in water

We discovered that when there’s a sound there’s also vibration, and that the louder the sound the bigger the vibrations. The blocks on the drum bounced, the elastic band vibrated from side to side, the ruler moved up and down and the water splashed out (we may have got a little wet!).  Miss French went on to explain that sound is caused by the vibration of particles and that these vibrations travel through the air and into our ears, causing us to hear them.
