History lesson 2: Seaside holidays from the past. 🏖

Re-watch the short clip from last week’s lesson about Blackpool in 1900 and discuss again what you notice about outfits, transport and any other differences.

Watch this short clip about Blackpool in the 1960s – 60 years later from the first video clip.

What differences and similarities are there? What are people wearing? How different is it to holidays in 1900 and holidays now? What are people doing on the beach and what sweet treats are they enjoying? Your task is to interview family members about what they remember about visiting the seaside when they were younger.

Find out what do they remember about getting to the beach? – Did they get the train, on a coach trip or in a car? What did they do once they got to the beach? Did they make sandcastles, play in the sea or visit the funfair? Do they remember what they had to eat at the beach? You can record this interview anyway you like. You may want to write the questions down and write the answers, or what about recording this on an iPad/tablet and pretend you’re a real-life historian!

If you have any questions about the work or would like to send us any pictures, please ask an adult to email:

Have a fantastic day!
