Today we tackled our first STOPS reasoning problem of the year.

The children worked in table teams to act out the problem and try to come up with a solution.

The Tier 1 and 2 problems, while challenging were solvable pretty quickly, but the Tier 3 problem had everyone stumped – including Miss French, Miss Wolf, Mrs Swindells and Mrs Short.

If any children can solve the problem (shown below) over the weekend – and comment on this post with the answer – they will receive some house points as a reward, as it really is a brain teaser.

I’ve sorted it!
I had a race to the solution with my son this evening and I got there first…
I’ll give you clues:
All lines add up to 34.
Make sure the first three big numbers are not in the corners as you don’t want to use them too often.
If you do get the rows to add up and the columns work out as well (but the diagonals don’t) just rearrange the rows – this will not effect the totals of the rows or columns but will make a big difference to the diagonals. It’s a bit of trial and error at this point until you get it right .
Thank you Miss French for providing pots of puzzle pondering fun.
Can I join in with your reasoning lesson next time?

You’re always welcome Mrs Short. Reasoning is Friday morning straight after assembly.

That’s great Kuba. Can you post your solution, please?

I found this very hard…

    Miss French · 25th September 2018 at 6:34 pm

What did you find hard about Amelia? Did you look at Mrs Shorts hints above?

This is so hard I used 3 and a half pages trying to work it out! Do you know the answer?

    Miss French · 9th October 2018 at 3:54 pm

I do. I’ll give you a hint – start with the corners.
