This week in Science, we conducted an investigation to find out the effect of sugary drinks on our teeth. We did this using eggs because egg shells are made of the sameness material as the enamel on our teeth – calcium carbonate.

We placed hard boiled eggs in 200ml of different drinks (water, milk, fresh orange juice, full fat Coca Cola and Monster energy drink). We left them for 24 hours before observing what happened.

We found that the following changes happened to the shell of the egg:

  • Water: no change to the shell
  • Milk: white film/lightening of the shell
  • Fresh orange juice: softening and decaying of the shell
  • Coca Cola: discolouration and cracking of the shell
  • Energy Drink: discolouration, softening and decaying of the shell

From this we can conclude that drinks with a high sugar content can affect your teeth by causing decay and discolouration. Water and milk are the best drinks to keep our teeth healthy because they either cause no change or help strengthen them.
